EstuaryLive, the NERR System nationwide web event, took place just before National Estuaries Day and some early statistics are now available. EstuaryLive 2006 featured four virtual field trips in one day for a total of 4 hours, 20 minutes of programming. The field trips featured segments on crabs, salmon, the scientific method, salt marshes, turtles, birds, fishermen, and much more.

Featured this year were the South Slough Reserve and Tillamook Bay Estuary Program (Oregon), Padilla Bay Reserve (Washington), New York-New Jersey Harbor Estuary Program, and the Peconic Estuary Program (New York).

An estimated 25,315 students and teachers participated via the Internet, up from 20,958 in 2005. Highlighting the interactive nature of EstuaryLive, participants asked 1,398 questions, an average of 350 questions per field trip.

The program was also broadcast by South Carolina Educational Television, Comcast of Delaware, the Oregon Aquarium, and on site at several Reserves.

Archived 2006 field trips are available at estuaries.gov.
