Wildlife Sighting: Goldsmith Beetle

Goldsmith Beetle, copyright Brandon WooVolunteer naturalist Eileen Willard spotted this Goldsmith Beetle (Cotalpa lanigera) outside the Visitor Center on May 31 and telephoned insect enthusiast Brandon Woo to tell him about it. Brandon came and photographed the uncommon insect.

In the high shot, it looks similar to Japanese beetle.

This beetle is almost an inch long and uniform in gold color....a real stand out. However, I haven't seen another since I taught school in Vermont in 1968! A second grade student brought one in from recess and it would be more than 40 years before I could enjoy looking at one again.
There's a connection to an Edgar Allen Poe writing if you google gold bug.
