YORK SELECTMEN TO HOST ENVIRONMENTAL FORUM

Expert presentations on land stewardship, watershed health, and fish biodiversity will anchor a free environmental forum for voters and other decision-makers at the York Public Library on Tuesday, November 18, from 6 to 9 pm.

York selectmen will host this special meeting to explore connections between science and policy, and between human and ecological health, particularly in the Cape Neddick and York River watersheds.

The first hour will be an open house and information fair, where participants can meet one on one with people who are working to protect land and water. Exhibitors will be on hand to talk about the University of New Hampshire's Center for Integrative Problem Solving, Maine's Beginning With Habitat program, the Center for Wildlife, Great Works Regional Land Trust, York Land Trust, the Mount Agamenticus to the Sea Initiative, York's geographic information system efforts, Maine Sea Grant's microbial source tracking project, Nonpoint Education for Municipal Officials, and vernal pool research.

At 7 pm, three conservation experts will speak about efforts to protect watersheds. Keith Fletcher from The Nature Conservancy will discuss land stewardship and the Mount Agamenticus to the Sea Initiative. Dr. Michele Dionne of the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve will explain how science supports watershed management and water quality protection. And Jim Dochtermann of the Wells Reserve will present the results of fish and habitat surveys completed on the York River.

The final hour will be devoted to a facilitated community dialogue.

The York Environmental Forum results from a collaboration among the Town of York, the York Conservation Commission, the York Rivers Association, the Cape Neddick River Association, York Land Trust, and the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve.

Refreshments will be provided. The York Public Library is located at 15 Long Sands Road in York. For more information, contact Dawn Morse (207) 646-1555 ext 117 or Christine Feurt at (207) 646-1555 ext 111.
