APRIL ACTIVITIES: WELLS RESERVE AT LAUDHOLM FARM

WELLS, MAINE --- Four April programs at the Wells Reserve herald the arrival of spring in south coastal Maine.

Earth Day Environmental Fair
Saturday, April 17, 11 am to 3 pm
Our free annual celebration of our planet features live music, guided walks, children's activities, readings, and information booths from over 30 organizations.

Woodcock Watch
Thursday, April 22, 7 to 8:30 pm
Learn about the fascinating woods-dwelling shorebird affectionately known as timberdoodle, wood snipe, or bog sucker. The male woodcock's mating performance involves a spiraling aerial display meant to entice the female, but it's sure to impress anyone who views it. Bring binoculars if you have them and wear warm outdoor clothing. The program fee is $2 for members of Laudholm Trust and $4 for nonmembers. Group size is limited and reservations are required at (207) 646-1555.

Discovering Vernal Pools
Saturday, April 24, 10 am to noon
Vernal pools are vulnerable wetlands inhabited by spotted salamanders, fairy shrimp, wood frogs, and other creatures that depend upon them for their survival. Come learn how to identify vernal pools and their flora and fauna through an indoor slide show followed by an outdoor visit to one of these temporary wetlands. The program fee is $2 for members of Laudholm Trust and $4 for nonmembers. Group size is limited and reservations are required at (207) 646-1555.

Letterboxing
Wednesday, April 28, noon to 1 pm
Letterboxing is an intriguing outdoor hobby that combines treasure hunting, orienteering, hiking, and art. Letterboxers hide a logbook and a carved stamp in a beautiful or interesting location, then compose clues that are posted to a website. Come learn the history of this unique pastime, discover how to become involved, and view some stunning carved images collected on the trail. This is a free program, but reservations are requested at (207) 646-1555. Please bring your bag lunch and a mug for free drinks.

The Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve is located at 342 Laudholm Farm Road, just off Routes 1 and 9 near the Wells-Kennebunk line. The Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farm investigates coastal environments and increases understanding of their ecology. For more information, call (207) 646-1555 or visit www.wellsreserve.org.
