www.wellsreserve.org/news/2004-05-11_plankton.htmMICROSCOPIC DRIFTERS IS ALL ABOUT PLANKTONWELLS, MAINE -- Drifting with the currents of the Gulf of Maine are uncountable millions of tiny plants and animals. These plankton, such as copepods and diatoms, may be invisible to the naked eye, but they form the all-important base of marine food webs. The Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve, in conjunction with York Adult Education, is offering an opportunity to learn all about plankton in the field and laboratory. Microscopic Drifters will take place on Wednesday, May 26, from 6 to 8 pm at the Wells Reserve. Walk down to the Little River and learn how to trap plankton in a special net. Carry the catch back to the on-site laboratory to examine tiny life forms under microscopes. Get to know plankton life through an integrated presentation by a Wells Reserve scientist and educator. The cost of the program is just $5. Participants should wear comfortable clothes and shoes that can get wet. For reservations or more information, call Sue Pike at (207) 646-1555 ext 157. The Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve, with facilities at historic Laudholm Farm, is committed to investigating coastal environments and increasing understanding of their ecology. # # #
