BEATRIX FARRAND'S MAINE LEGACY EXPLORED

WELLS, MAINE - Landscape gardener Beatrix Jones Farrand, the only woman among the eleven founders of the American Society of Landscape Architects, designed the Dumbarton Oaks gardens in Washington, D.C., the East and West gardens at the White House, and the rose garden at the New York Botanical Gardens. Farrand also designed gardens at and around her summer home in Bar Harbor. Farrand's Maine legacy will be the focus of a presentation by Patrick Chassé at the Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farm on August 19. The presentation is open to the public and is free with Wells Reserve admission.

From 10:30 to 11:30 am, Chassé will speak about Beatrix Farrand's Maine Legacy in Mather Auditorium. From 11:30 to 12:30, the Piscataqua Garden Club will display horticulture, design, and photography exhibits in the Laudholm barn. Horticulture exhibits will include native flowering perennials, collections in bloom, grasses, and fruits and vegetables, while design arrangements will focus on texture.

Farrand (1872-1959) was knowledgeable about Maine's native plant species and sensitive to using them effectively to echo nature's beauty in formal gardens that could withstand the state's harsh climate. Her work continues to influence the field of landscape architecture. Books on Farrand's work will be available for sale during the program.

Patrick Chassé is a Maine-born landscape architect and moss expert who lectures at Harvard University, the New York Botanical Gardens, and elsewhere across the country. He is currently writing a series of articles for Horticulture magazine and a book on moss culture. Chassé is also working to establish a Beatrix Farrand Society based at Garland Farm, Maine.

This program is presented by the Piscataqua Garden Club in collaboration with the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve. The Wells Reserve is located at 342 Laudholm Farm Road in Wells, just off Routes 1 and 9 near the Kennebunk line. FMI (207) 646-1555.
