SWAMPWALKER AND TURTLE EXPERT TO SPEAK AT WELLS RESERVE

WELLS, MAINE - Naturalist and artist David M. Carroll will talk at the Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farm on August 26 at 7 pm. The presentation is free and open to the public. Please bring a mug for free organic coffee or tea. FMI (207) 646-1555.

David Carroll is the author and illustrator of three widely acclaimed natural histories known as the wet sneaker trilogy: The Year of the Turtle, Trout Reflections, and Swampwalker's Journal. His new book, Self Portrait with Turtles, was released earlier this year. A selection of his books and artwork will be available for purchase after his presentation.

Carroll is an active turtle and wetlands preservation advocate. His art and writing, as well as his extensive fieldwork with turtles and wetlands, have been widely recognized. His botanical and forestry paintings have earned him awards from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the International Society of Arboriculture. In 1999, he received an Environmental Merit Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Carroll is a graduate of the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts and Tufts University. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the University of New Hampshire and an Honorary Masters from New England College. In 2001, he received the John Burroughs Medal for Literature in Nature Writing.

Carroll's presentations on turtle ecology, vernal pools, and other wetland habitats, as well as his seminars and workshops on nature-journaling, have been featured in numerous schools, colleges, universities, conservation institutions, and libraries. He has presented to audiences ranging from elementary schools to graduate programs and professional herpetology symposia.

His artwork has been widely exhibited, including shows at the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation (permanent collection), Dartmouth College Museum and Galleries, Plymouth State art gallery and the Dodd Center, University of Connecticut.

The Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve, with facilities at historic Laudholm Farm, is committed to investigating coastal environments and increasing understanding of their ecology.
