The programs last about 2 hours and are ideal for anyone curious about southern Maine's beaches and marshes who is able to walk a mile or two. Each program costs $2 per person after admission to the Wells Reserve. Reservations are required at 646-1555. On Friday, July 29 at noon, muck in the mudflats with Laura Lubelczyk. Get ready to be wet and muddy as Laura helps you poke around the flats, teaching about clams, crabs, marsh plants, and shorebirds at the mouth of the Little River. On Sunday, July 31 at 1:30 pm, explore barrier beaches with Sarah Jolly. Learn how these geological features form and how they provide an important buffer between the Gulf of Maine and coastal environments. Sarah will also show you the rare birds that depend upon the shifting sands of unstabilized dunes. On Thursday, August 4 at 12:30 pm, discover life in a drop of water during Microscopic Drifters with Sue Pike. Tiny plants and animals called plankton are critical to marine food webs, providing nourishment to fish, birds, and other coastal species. Ask Sue about glowing plankton and red tides. The Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farm is offering more than 50 other education programs in the next few weeks.
