PUNKINFIDDLE MEANS FUN FOR FAMILIES AND FIDDLE FANS

Punkinfiddle Website

WELLS, MAINE - Punkinfiddle, a family festival featuring fiddle music, old-fashioned games, traditional crafts, scrumptious food, farm animals, and lots of pumpkins will be held at the Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farm on Saturday, October 8, from 10 am to 5 pm. (Rain date Oct. 9.)

People of all ages find lots to love about Punkinfiddle. "Best fair we've ever been to!" said one Maine couple. "Had the best time. We will be back," promised a Massachusetts family.

For our third year, we have another great line-up of outstanding musicians to feature at Punkinfiddle. Get ready for contemporary bluegrass, folk, and beyond with High Range; unique and compelling northern music with Nightingale; and a mix of maritime and old-time music with Cluck Old Hen.

Kids can carve or paint a pumpkin, make a scarecrow, press apples, or churn butter. Sack races, three-legged races, egg relays, tugs-of-war, and pumpkin seed spitting are among the games planned.

Throughout the day, artisans will demonstrate their crafts and provide insight into traditional livelihoods. Punkinfiddle will welcome wool spinning, knitting, rug braiding, tape loom weaving, natural fabric dyeing, violin making, stone wall building, small boat building, canning, basket weaving, and bee keeping, among others.

The ever-popular sheep herding dogs will demonstrate their skill throughout the day and horse-drawn hay rides and pony rides will be offered for a small fee. Oxen, goats, and chickens will be among Punkinfiddle's other creatures great and small.

Food will feature chowders and meats and all kinds of treats. The Wells Farmers Market will be on site, too, so folks can take home fine local produce and products.

Punkinfiddle sponsors include Sevigney-Lyons Insurance, Shaw's, Bandaloop, Marlows, Dietz Associates, Stonewall Kitchen, Garden Street Market, TD Banknorth, and Wells Veterinary Hospital.

Tickets are $8 ($10 at the gate) for adults, $6 for seniors, and $4 for children ages 6 to 16. Kids under 6 get in free. Advance tickets are on sale at the Wells Reserve visitor center, online at www.punkinfiddle.org, or at (207) 646-4521.

Proceeds will benefit Laudholm Trust, the nonprofit organization that supports research, education, and stewardship at the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve.

The Wells Reserve is located at 342 Laudholm Farm Road, just off Routes 1 and 9 near the Wells-Kennebunk line and just 7 minutes from Maine Turnpike exit 19. The site boasts several historic buildings, excellent exhibits, and seven miles of easy hiking trails through fields and forests to salt marshes and a sandy beach.
