The State Planning Office, Code Enforcement Officer Training and Certification program will sponsor a training workshop at the Wells Reserve on basic Legal Issues.

Durward Parkinson from the law firm of Bergen & Parkinson will be presenting. Issues covered include, but are not limited to:

• jurisdiction and authority of the code enforcement officer regarding State and local laws
• employment issues
• conflict of interest and incompatibility of offices
• resisting political pressure
• ethical use of authority
• record-keeping
• liability
• municipal ordinance authority
• ordinance interpretation
• noncomforming uses and lots, subdivisions, and appeals and variances

Registration will begin at 8:00. The session will run from 8:30-3:30. Due to budget restrictions we will not be able to provide food. Please bring coffee and a bag lunch. You will have an hour for lunch if you would like to leave the meeting site for lunch.
Code Enforcement Officers and Local Plumbing Inspectors will earn six recertification credits in the area of Legal Issues. Individuals seeking certification will find the workshop and materials helpful in preparation for the Legal Issues exam.

Please note: This is basic training geared toward new code enforcement officers and local plumbing inspectors as well as those preparing to sit for exams. In the proposed CEO Training and Certification rule a CEO or LPI can only use 6 credits of basic training toward recertification in any specific certification area.
