Artist Statement
The most familiar and commonly shared experience with landscape is the one viewed through the windshield. These Sumi ink and brush drawings were made while parked on a short stretch of the Harbor Road, Wells, Maine. I work sitting behind the steering wheel in my pickup.
The truck is essential to my living in Maine and for many years I have used it as a studio. This has allowed me to work at various locations along the coast, virtually secluded and in relative comfort, even during the most adverse weather conditions. The space is confining and limits what I use and how large my work can be, but I adjust as my needs change.
Initially, I'm attracted to places because of their physical aspects, and certainly the use of a vehicle has influenced what I respond to and consider. I settle into an area, often working there for years. I then begin to see and feel the thing that interests me most, the change that is occurring, not only in the world surrounding me, but more importanty, in the image as it develops.
