Resilience Thinking: Ecological Recovery in Coastal Maine

May 7, 2012, 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm View more Events

John LichterMaine's rivers, estuaries, and coastal marine ecosystems historically supported prodigious abundances of wildlife. Alewives and blueback herring emigrated out of our river systems by the millions, and were exploited for food by nearshore groundfish populations such as Atlantic cod and haddock, as well as humans. However, over the past three centuries, human activities have resulted in the collapse of these anadromous prey species, in turn decimating the nearshore groundfishery.

Join John Lichter, the Samuel S. Butcher Associate Professor in the Natural Sciences at Bowdoin College, to learn about his long-term study on understanding how continued ecological recovery could stimulate economic activity in coastal Maine.
