Wettest and warmest March in Maine history

Posted by | April 14, 2010

With the impressive amounts of rain in the last month or so, and some unusually warm temperatures in March and early April, I thought I would share some of the more interesting weather trends we recorded through our System Wide Monitoring Program here at the reserve. March was the wettest and warmest on record for the state of Maine!

In the month of March we had an INCREDIBLE 16" of rain collected at the Wells Reserve! Portland received 11" of rain in March, which shows that heavy rains can be very localized, and Wells certainly got hit bad in March with many heavy "bands" of precipitation. The period of February 24th to April 1st saw 25" of rainfall at Laudholm! That is an Incredible amount. I guess we can be thankful it did not fall as snow!!!!

Another unusual occurrence happened on April 7th at 3:30 in the afternoon. (See graph Below).

Early April air temp.

Our weather station recorded a high temperature of 86 Degrees Fahrenheit! As you can see from the graph, there was a difference of 50 degrees in 3 days time!

Here is a great link to a "summary" of weather readings for the month of March 2010 from our partners at the National Weather Service.
