The First Blade of Sweetgrass

Posted by | March 24, 2022 | Filed under: Program Activities

With the spring equinox earlier this week came the changing of story walks on the Saw-whet Owl Trail! The new featured book for this season is The First Blade of Sweetgrass by married authors Suzanne Greenlaw (Maliseet) and Gabriel Frey (Passamaquoddy). It tells the touching story of a Wabanaki girl who visits a Maine salt marsh with her grandmother to harvest sweetgrass for traditional basket making. Maine artist Nancy Baker's illustrations fill the pages and transport the reader to beautiful meadows of sweetgrass. Come visit the Reserve to enjoy this story walk by the summer solstice, when a new book will be installed!
