York River Wild and Scenic Update

Posted by | October 27, 2011

Not long ago, we mentioned the York River Wild and Scenic study bill. Here's an update:

The "Wild and Scenic" effort received a boost late this summer when U.S. Representative Chellie Pingree submitted a Wild and Scenic Study Bill in Congress. On September 15, a public hearing on the bill was held by the Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests, and Public Lands. Dr. Maryann J. Minard, director of curriculum at York School Department, provided testimony to the committee. You can read her remarks and see some photographs here: Minard Testimony.

If the study bill passes both the House and Senate, a comprehensive feasibility study would be done, including assessments of history and archaeology, ecology and biodiversity, fisheries, water quality, land use, and other topics.
