Join Maine Master Naturalist instructor Jeff Pengel in exploring the natural history of some common ferns of coastal Maine. Jeff will emphasize the ecology and unique biological adaptations of the ferns and allies we encounter. He will also provide identification tips for the species we find. A hand lens is helpful but not required. Cameras welcome.

The Wells Reserve operates in accordance with orders from the Governor of Maine and instructions from the Maine Center for Disease Control. Reserve leadership will monitor, evaluate, and adapt as needed to ensure all programs operate safely and effectively.

Please have a mask on hand if you are not vaccinated and/or feel safer being masked in a group setting.

About the Presenter

Jeff Pengel was trained as a botanist and geologist at The University of Akron. Jeff is a former high school science teacher and taught earth science and biology in public schools. He worked many seasons as an outdoor educator for Nature's Classroom in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Jeff now volunteers as a naturalist for the Appalachian Mountain Club at many of their facilities. He is also a Maine Master Naturalist instructor and volunteers for that program and at many Maine land trusts. Jeff has taught the botany of non-flowering plants for many terms at several Maine Senior College locations.
