Preparing for Sea Level Rise in Maine

The impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly visible in our state and across the nation. Intense storms, unusual temperatures, and ocean warming are just some of the climate-related stories covered in local news. Sea level rise, however, is less visible, as are the compounding effects of storm surge and extreme precipitation events.

Ensuring the region’s resiliency to sea level rise clearly requires a scientifically informed and engaged public, now and in the future. Join us to explore the data behind sea level rise and models projecting its future impacts. How can we best prepare our communities for resiliency? Gayle Bowness, a Nova Scotia native, has a B.S. in Marine Biology from Dalhousie University and a M.S. from Lesley University in Ecological Teaching and Learning. She has been living in Maine for 14 years and has been working at Gulf of Maine Research Institute since 2005. Gayle has designed and delivered a variety of education programs, from watersheds to electricity efficiency and is now focused on sea level rise. Gayle is raising her 2 children in Cape Elizabeth where they enjoy exploring the coastline of Maine.
