This presentation will take us traveling through time looking at the material culture of Maine’s Native Americans during abrupt climatic events, from an ice tundra environment to the boreal forests we have today, and how Native Americans adapted to an ever changing climate in Maine.

Chris Sockalexis (Penobscot) is the Penobscot Nation Tribal Historic Preservation Officer. He is also one of the lead singers for the powwow drum group, The RezDogs, who travel throughout the Northeast singing at powwows, festivals and gatherings. Chris is currently working on his Master’s degree in Archaeology at the University of Maine’s Climate Change Institute focusing on Archaic Ceremonial Burials in the Gulf of Maine. Chris is an avid paddler and loves being out on the rivers and lakes that his ancestors have traveled since time immemorial.
