Making PORTAL Permanent

Sculpture at the heart of new programming.

David Allen’s PORTAL has stood strong for 6 years now. You can help keep it standing forever.

A Part of the Landscape

Portal anchors the northwest edge of the Laudholm campus of the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve. This view was captured early in the morning of November 6, 2021, by Nik Charov.

Past… and Future

PORTAL was constructed by sculptor David Allen for our 2017 Summer of Art & Science. Allen was also Wells Reserve at Laudholm Artist-in-Residence for 2015.

The sculpture has been on loan by the artist for 5+ years. In 2023, Laudholm Trust intends to purchase PORTAL so we can add it as a permanent installation to the campus.

You can help make that happen. Your donation will ensure PORTAL stands strong—and acts as a centerpiece for imagination, creativity, and new programming.

Sculpture & Therapy

Local author and therapist Elizabeth Straka is partnering with sculptor David Allen and the Wells Reserve to develop facilitated walks in March 2023 and self-guided tours around the sculpture—and how it depicts loss, grief, and compassion. Straka writes:

Portal stands in a field with bold strength and tenderness. Its stones resonate with the importance of interconnectedness. They depend on each other to ensure stability and sustainability
